Located in an old brick & saw-tooth roof warehouse in one of South Melbourne’s semi-industrial bluestone laneways, the men’s grooming & apparel retail fit-out takes inspiration from the building’s industrial origins. The simple two-storey volume & brick shell demanded thoughtful design to activate the space. The approach was to break-up the open plan warehouse with a series of vignettes designed around various brief driven activities to create a more intimate atmosphere and give the open generous space a sense of purpose.
Industrial & masculine inspired materials, such as timber, concrete, brick, leather, chrome, aged brass & copper were used throughout to give a sophisticated urban aesthetic well suited to the masculine aspects of the brief and the industrial character of the neighbourhood.
The design also draws on minimalist Japanese influences and mid-century details giving it a sense of tranquillity from its clean lines and use of honest natural materials. The overall effect is a fresh take on the traditional barbershop, which leans well away from some of the kitsch or retro barbershop fitouts that have become almost commonplace. In contrast the fitout is both peaceful & considered while still being cozy & inviting.
