Taking advantage of a sloped site, combined with having both street frontage and rear laneway access, the sophisticated three-storey, side-by-side dwellings successfully insert themselves into this leafy Melbourne suburb of mostly single-family homes without disruption to scale or neighbourhood character. Following the natural topography of the land, the overall mass of the design is cleverly tucked into the site and skilfully massaged with side setbacks, courtyards and staggered rooflines to increase natural light penetration, reduce volume and preserve privacy.
While the two-storey street facade presents as a contemporary take on a traditional pitched roof dwelling, the rear of the dwellings is more modern with a flat roof volume, semi-recessed into the site with a ramp to access the basement garage. To further diminish the overall building mass a warm toned brick base emerges from the ground with darker elements of matt black steel & charcoal stone overhead to create an elegant two-tone volume.
The brick base also acts as a central dividing spine between the mirror image dwellings, exposing its natural tactile beauty as a design feature throughout the entry, light well, stair well and main living spaces. Combined with a central glazed atrium & stair well, the clever courtyard design allows for generous light filled spaces throughout as they wrap around a central garden, alfresco & pool. area.
