The design intent of this single-family dwelling located in a quiet, inner-city Melbourne suburb is a clean modernist aesthetic with a layout that takes full advantage of the north facing, corner block. The dwelling exudes a simple informal composition of volumes based on natural expressed materials, such as slimline bricks, natural cement render, stained timber & metal cladding.
The ground floor is grounded by a charcoal grey brick base. The second storey presents a bold metal clad facade and exaggerated eaves overhang that provides a grand public gesture to the street, shelter to a generous upstairs balcony and acts as a natural light scoop. While the rendered, second storey, side street facade presents a more subdued & ordered arrangement with a simple ribbon of north facing windows wrapping the upper floor.
With a C-shaped floor plan and a semi-recessed basement garage accessed from the rear of the property, the rooms are organised around a central garden with generous expanses of glazing facing inward, taking advantage of the north-facing side of the corner block. Virtually every room is drenched in natural light and afforded a garden view. The result is a sophisticated family home that is both private and transparent at the same time.
